2017 Pirelli Calendar: Against the Terror of Perfection

For the second year in a row, the Pirelli Calendar decided to take a stand against today’s artificial ways of portraying women. Usually filled with photographs of barely clothed models chosen for their looks, these last two years women were fully clothed and chosen for their achievements alone.

In 2016, the Pirelli Calendar got people talking when, breaking with tradition for the first time in its history, it showed real influential women photographed by renowned portrait shooter, Annie Leibowitz. From 65-year-old author, Fran Lebowitz, to 20-year-old writer and actress, Tavi Gevinson, the 12 women pictured had all made a mark in business, art, philanthropy, entertainment, and beyond.

“I wanted the pictures to show the women exactly as they are, with no pretense.” Said Leibowitz in a statement at the time.

Actress and stand-up comedian, Amy Schumer, was the only one to pose nude ironically, the joke being that she was the one who did not get the memo that everyone else was clothed.

For the 2017 edition, German photographer, Peter Lindbergh, took over and decided to capture unretouched and natural beauty this time around. Featuring 14 stunning actresses, including Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman and Helen Mirren, his black and white series is continuing last year’s tradition of picturing authentic, free and strong women.

Shot between London, New York, Berlin and Los Angeles, each photo tries to uncover raw feelings showing that beauty is not about youth and perfection. Staring at those fierce portraits, it is apparent that Lindbergh tried to capture the human.

“The ideal of perfect beauty promoted by society is something that simply can’t be attained. In a time when women are represented in the media — and everywhere else — as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests,” photographer Peter Lindbergh said in a statement.
