Maybe She’s Born With It… Maybe It’s Halloween?
Just when we all thought the Kylie Jenner overdrawn lip phase couldn’t get any worse, here comes its sequel – lollipop lips. If makeup is an art form used to enhance our natural beauty, then it follows the principle that we can think of our face as a blank canvas. With makeup as our tool, we can create a masterpiece! But sometimes, reality doesn’t quite meet expectation. If there was a Makeup Police, would you have a record?
Applying lipstick is much like filling in a children’s colouring book with crayons; the aim is to stay in the lines. Lately, however, the lollipop lip trend has people intentionally applying lipstick like they’re going dressed up as the Joker from Batman for Halloween.
This makeup trend was first put in the spotlight by MAC who drew attention to the models sporting this look on runway shows around fashion week. It is intended to mimic how one would look after sucking on a lollipop and rolling it around on the lips. But isn’t that something we did when we were five? Is a childish habit now being used as a technique? We’re not buying it.
But the word lollipop is really just a euphemism for penis. Remember the lyrics from 50 Cent Candy Shop? “I’ll take you to the Candy Shop, I’ll make you lick the lollipop.” This look is meant to be sexy because the smudged lips are supposed to represent someone who has just finished giving a blowjob. Trendy? More like trashy.
“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance”, famous words spoken by a true fashion icon – Coco Chanel. But looking around, we are left thinking – whatever happened to simple yet classy lips? Bring back classy!
Are lollipop lips even new anyway? Isn’t the more accurate term ‘hungover mess makeup’? We have all been there. Barnet like a bird’s nest, tarantula leg looking eyelashes dripping in mascara running down the face and lipstick smeared from one corner of the cheek to the other like Ronald McDonald. But this is the aftermath from a night of hard-core partying. Surely it is not our aim to intentionally look like this? This is one makeup trend that needs to end.
