Whether you’re a peckish tourist with a busy itinerary or a city worker craving something succulent on your lunch break, the capital has something to satisfy anyone’s appetite. Forget McDonald’s and KFC, London’s restaurant industry now offers a rich and diverse selection of flavoursome takeaways available for your consumption in a matter of minutes. Here’s our guide to the best joints in town for lunch on-the-go:
38 Poland St, Soho, London W1F 7LY
For an authentic taste of Britain, there’s only one thing for it- good old fashioned fish and chips. This retro style chippie located in the heart of Soho serves up the most heavenly cod, coated in crispy golden batter. But if you’re not a huge fish fan they’ve got plenty of alternatives that’ll float your boat- you can even order battered halloumi cheese! Not one to be missed.
Weekdays: Soho and Fitzrovia, Weekends: Hackney
Now for something completely different. Taiwanese restaurant, Bao, serves up delectable steamed buns with glorious meaty fillings- kind of like a mini burger but a lot edgier. Their website describes the baos/buns as “soft, pillowy and cloud-like” – basically the food of dreams. There are often queues out the door for this stuff, and yes, it’s THAT good. If you’re not prepared to wait for a seat in one of their Soho stores, try their bar in Netil Market, Hackney which is dedicated to takeout. If you’re after something that’s a little unconventional and fancy a change from the norm, this is the place for you. Totally Instagram-worthy too we might add.
8 Market Pl, Fitzrovia, London W1W 8AG
A reliable venue for a cheeky spot of Italian around dinner time, Carluccio’s actually draws in quite a crowd at lunchtime too. Their £5 pasta box and drink deal has city dwellers fleeing their desks in droves. You get to choose from a range of different pasta dishes and you can even have a bit of each if you should be so inclined. They’ll also throw in some garlic bread for a small fee if you ask nicely. Bellissimo!
Branches in Soho, Fitzrovia and Greenwich
Lebanese chain Yalla Yalla is perfect for those wanting to sample something a little more exotic than a squashed ham roll for their midday meal. The restaurant offers beautiful Beirut style street food, made fresh every day and ready in less than ten minutes. From lamb shawarmas to hummus and falafel wraps, there are oodles of options to pick from their massive mouth-watering menu.
26 Noel St, Soho, London W1F 8GY
An absolute must for any true cheese lover, people flock here from far and wide to get their hands on these tasty toasties. Melt room in Soho offers a divine selection of grilled sandwiches to get your teeth into and you can even get a side of truffle cheesy fries! For those of you with more of a sweet tooth, they also offer dessert options such as the PB & Jelly and Banoffee melts. Perhaps not the most guilt-free cuisine but we guarantee you won’t regret it!
Branches in The City and around Soho
If you’re into clean eating, this might be more up your street. Leafy greens and veggies galore, VI sources its ingredients and recipes from all around the world resulting in food that’s nutritious AND delicious. You can either design your own salad, choose from one of many on the menu or opt for one of their hot dishes which are particularly nourishing in the colder months. Definitely worth a visit if your immune system could do with a boost.
