Let’s get tropical as we change from the delicates of Spring into the wild-side of Summer!
Can’t make it to the beach this holiday? Well, there’s no harm in dressing the part! Bring out the crochet and the risque. Designers such as Tommy Hilfiger, Anna Sui, and Paul + Joe have nailed the vacation vibe with their ‘island hopping’ inspired looks on the runway this season.
Tommy Hilfiger Spring/Summer 2016
Rasta Americana. Bob Marley once said, “The most beautiful curve on a woman’s body is her smile”. Hilfiger’s model crew, however, strutted down the runway showing plenty of ‘other curves’ in the Caribbean inspired collection. Crochet bikini’s leave little to the imagination, ultimately sparking Island Princess Rihanna’s interest. Staying true to her roots (and controversial reputation) she wears a striped mesh maxi dress over a multi-coloured bikini in her ‘Work’ music video. This look was pulled fresh off the runway and is featured below. Keeping his classic Americana style, Hilfiger keeps the silhouettes simple with T-shirt dresses and loungewear-like trousers. Fabrics such as clean-pressed cotton, crochet, mesh, and chiffon were used throughout the collection. Key pieces for this Rasta Americana look include: printed maxi dress, bomber jacket, striped bucket hat, crochet bikini, layered beaded bracelets, chunky tassel necklace.
Anna Sui Spring/Summer 2016
Aloha to Hawaiian Glamour. Anna Sui takes style in paradise to a whole new level with rich, jewel tones and tribal tattoos. Conquering all tourist cliches, Sui embraces all but the sunscreen striped nose and coconut bra. On a palm tree lined runway the catwalkers are accessorized with flower leis, faux tribal tattoos and even a ukulele. Prints of pineapples and starfish along with bits of fringe, a mock hula skirt and shell/flower crowns make this collection truly stand out this season. Even the makeup is perfectly unexpected with a more defined eye and a deep maroon lip. There is a 70s theme in the silhouettes, a sort of pin-up girl turned jet-setter. The looks ranged from sporty chic, structured with tailored shorts and matching jackets, to effortless island babe with billowing printed frocks or high-waisted bikinis. Key pieces for a Hawaiian Glamour look include: floral silk gown, novelty printed boardshorts, sarong style skirt, fringed kimono, flower choker, socks and sandals (to avoid extreme fashion faux pas please refer to runway for example.)
Paul + Joe Spring/Summer 2016
Buy a ticket and take a ride to Retro Island. Pastels, metallics, denim and sequins, this collection go from sunbathing to sipping cocktails. Paul + Joe have certainly covered all the bases in tropical Vegas style, ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ that is. Channeling an inner Raoul Duke by accessorizing with oversized aviator glasses, the models also wore palm tree charms and tote drawstring bags over their shoulders. On the casual side of this collection are 70s inspired T-shirts, embellished jeans and metallic sneakers (no tube socks required). For a night of cocktails you can slip into a slinky, off the shoulder tunic or sequined shorts and T-shirt ensemble (true to Vegas style). Don’t forget to suit up for evening in a loose fitting trouser/blazer combination or stay by the pool in an adorable palm printed, ruffled one piece. Key pieces for a Retro Island look include: ruffled printed romper, palm printed button down shirt, embellished denim shorts, metallic trouser, off the shoulder sundress, and metallic cowboy bootie. (Don’t forget the shades.)
