How To Handle a Minor Traffic Accident

Every driver needs to know what to do if they are involved in a car accident. Particularly if the accident is minor, it might not seem clear how you should proceed. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you find yourself in a fender bender.

    Move to Safety

If the accident happens in an area that has heavy traffic, it might be necessary to move away from the scene of the accident to keep everyone safe. If the cars can be driven, moving them onto the shoulder, or even into a nearby parking lot, can improve safety and reduce the impact of the collision on other traffic. Even if you can’t move the vehicles, be sure that any occupants either stay safe in the car or move to a safe location.

    Inspect the Damage

Most people have phones with high-quality cameras these days. Once you’ve determined that everyone is safe, use your phone to take photos of the damage to all cars involved in the accident. This can be a helpful record as you work with your insurance to get repairs done later. If you don’t have collision insurance or your insurance won’t cover all repairs, keep in mind that you can bring down repair costs by using used truck parts for sale when possible.

    Get a Police Report

Some drivers will ask you not to report the accident, instead offering to pay for your repairs themselves. It’s better for everyone to call the police right away and get a police report. In addition, while you’re waiting for the police to arrive, it’s a great idea to exchange personal information with the other drivers. Every driver involved in the accident should share their full name, the name of their insurance company, and their policy number.

If you are involved in a traffic accident, be sure to stay calm and do what’s needed to keep everyone safe. Keep in mind what steps you should take to document the accident, and you can worry about repairs and any follow-up later.
