Having a good level of natural light in a property is essential to making a home feel welcoming and can help us feel relaxed and rejuvenated. It is a way of letting the outside in and connecting with nature. It is also a key thing that homebuyers look out for when viewing properties and can make or break whether someone can fall in love with a home. Easy access for natural light also means you will have to use artificial lighting less, which can save on your energy bills and is good for reducing your carbon footprint.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the best ways to increase the levels of natural light in your home to help boost your mood and make your house brighter and more homely, ranging from the more expensive options down to those for people on a budget.

    Add a Skylight

This is perhaps the best way to increase the natural light in a room. With the windowpanes facing up towards the sky, it is less likely that they will be in the shadow of trees, foliage or other buildings, allowing unfiltered natural light to flow into your home. Having said this, you should bear in mind what direction the skylight will face. If it is north facing, it will receive less light than a south facing one. Are you looking for a new place to live? Renting an apartment can be a daunting task, especially if you’re a beginner. From understanding the different types of apartments available to finding the right one that fits your needs and budget, there are many things to consider. This guide will help you navigate through the process of renting an apartment and make sure that you end up with a place that is perfect for you. Skylights can vary from small, individual panes, to large fittings with multiple panes that can cover whole rooms. The price can therefore vary, but it goes without saying that installing a skylight is one of the more expensive options as not only will you have to pay for the skylight but all the work and maintenance to fit it.

Sliding Patio Doors and French Windows

Also more on the high end of affordability, sliding patio doors are an excellent way to let natural light flood in. They have become a must-have feature for many homeowners, providing not only the light but also practicality for coming in and out of a house.

While often found in kitchens and living rooms, people have been getting more adventurous in where they put their French windows, with many bedrooms and even bathrooms now coming with patio doors fitted.

    Paint Your Walls White

White is a colour that naturally reflects light, whereas black absorbs it. Having white walls and furnishings can therefore increase the light levels in a room without the need for artificial light.

If you do not want white, lighter paint shades will help improve the levels of light as opposed to darker ones.

Opt for Light Coloured, Polished Stone Flooring

As with the walls, darker floors will absorb more light, so it’s important to not forget to have lighter, polished floor tiles to reflect as much light as possible.

You may not want to invest in a bright white floor, so a good option is to go for a shiny, polished grey, which will still reflect a good level of light.

    Increase the Number of Mirrors

Mirrors, obviously, reflect light so having a nice large mirror, or a few strategically placed throughout the room can really boost the presence of natural light. Placing mirrors opposite windows is the best way to help do this. Not only increasing natural light, mirrors also make great features for any room.

    Rearrange Furniture

Repositioning furniture so that it doesn’t block any incoming natural light is the most cost-effective way to increase natural light, only requiring a bit of physical labour.

Avoid having anything obscuring windows. Some people tend to position their TVs in front of windows or have desks in bedrooms partially blocking windows. Think about the best possible way you can arrange your furniture so that it allows the maximum amount of natural light in but also works functionally as a layout.
