Since 1980, Herbalife has been offering solutions for people to live healthier lives. The Formula 1 meal replacement shake has been around for 40 years and continues to help people achieve a healthy weight. Today, more than 4.8 million people across the globe use Herbalife’s nutritional shakes every day.
More than 300 scientists are part of the Herbalife Nutrition team, and the company now has six research and development facilities and seven ingredient inspection labs. One of those labs checks the performance of all other labs. The company uses more than 150 ingredient testing methods to check to ensure no contaminant gets into the final product. Herbalife also makes sure all ingredients comply with government regulations where their products are being sold.
The team of scientists at Herbalife makes sure all ingredients conform to the highest standards, as part of their “Seed to Feed” manufacturing process. Herbalife ingredients go through a rigorous quality control process from the prototype stage to the final formula. Once the team identifies the need for a nutritional product, Herbalife spares no expense to develop a formula that includes the best ingredients sourced from trusted vendors around the globe.
Every ingredient, whether it’s tea from China, aloe from Mexico, or soybeans from the US, must adhere to strict specifications. Potential ingredients go through an extensive screening process that could last for 18 months. Once an ingredient passes the screening test, Herbalife performs in-house tests to make sure the ingredient meets the company’s high standards.
To ensure consistency, Herbalife Nutrition also sets up in-house production lines. In-house manufacturing systems also enhance the quality control process. This makes it easier to inspect ingredients to ensure quality.
Herbalife currently has five facilities that manufacture products in-house. The company also works with two trusted manufacturers who work on a contract basis. Products produced by the contract manufacturers go through the same high-level quality assurance process that the in-house facilities go through.
The company built the first Herbalife Innovation and Manufacturing facility (or HIM) in Suzhou, China. This H.I.M. produces shakes, teas, capsules, and tablets. In 2009, the company established the Lake Forest, California H.I.M. And in 2012, Herbalife opened its third H.I.M. facility in Shangsha, China.
In North Carolina, the Winston-Salem H.I.M. facility is the size of six football fields. The facility also has the company’s Quality Control Center of Excellence Lab, which tests the chemical, microbiological, and physical properties of each ingredient and product.
When the manufacturing process ends, Herbalife makes sure every product has the right ingredient label. The company also makes sure product temperature doesn’t fluctuate before the shipping process begins. After the shipping process, Herbalife continues to track its products using an innovative consumer-based approach, which helps the team track any issues with customer orders
