The Hidden Cost of Owning an Old Car

To some car owners, an old car is the best memory they have of their dad. Their old pal is gone, but having his old car around provides a sense of comfort. Unfortunately, keeping and driving an old car comes at a cost.

    Not reliable enough

If you’re holding on to an old car instead of buying a new one, know that older vehicles are susceptible to frequent breakdowns. Holding on to your dear vehicle can cause you much inconvenience, tardiness in meetings, and even canceled plans. If this continues for a while, your relationships can get affected. Fixing old stuff instead of buying a new one can indeed save you money. However, it’s not always about the money. It helps to consider how long you can keep repairing your car while suffering the consequences of untimely breakdowns.

    Upkeep

Only a few car owners have the knowledge, skills, and experience to extend a vehicle’s life. Old cars in mint condition are well taken care of. Apart from the technical know-how, it takes a lot of passion, money, and time to take care of one’s car. However, if this is not precisely your arena, the frequent back and forth to the auto shop can be cumbersome. This will eventually leave your vehicle collecting rust and dust. Neglect and time are unkind to cars. Once a vehicle is ignored, no amount of care can reverse the effects of time. Rather than delaying the decision to get rid of your aged vehicle, your car is better off being out in the market. Coordinate with junk car dealers to unmask your vehicle’s inner treasure.

    Not safe enough

Car safety has come a long way. Today’s cars have more advanced systems that mitigate the effects of a crash while protecting its passengers. When properly used, these safety measures significantly increase the probability of escaping a car crash unscathed. The same is not true with older cars and later car models. Many of them lack autonomous brakes, effective cruise control, lane assist, reversing camera, and GPS. What makes older cars less safe than new ones is that more advanced technology in automobiles deploys high-strength steels that crumple less during accidents.

Safety is an essential feature in vehicles, and would you feel comfortable about your loved ones driving cars that do not offer good enough protection in case an accident occurs? Studies show that fatal crashes between 2005 and 2011 were more frequent in older cars and older models. The probability of encountering a fatal crash is less for a newer model of vehicles aged three years and below, compared to the older model of cars aged 18 years and above.

A well-maintained older car could be worth more than its market value or the value of a younger model. This is usually because of market demand and the amount of work and maintenance done to preserve it. If you are up for a little challenge, albeit the hidden costs, maintaining your old car can be truly fulfilling.
