For centuries and centuries, gemstones have been massively respected and appreciated all over the world. There are many different gemstones that have a completely unique appearance and with that comes a distinctive set of meanings that make them exceptionally special to people. The most famous gemstone is the diamond, known to represent love and happiness, making them a popular choice for both modern and vintage engagement rings. However, there is so much more to a diamond than this that we are going to introduce to you today!
An Introduction To Diamonds
Diamonds are traditionally considered as the most beautiful gemstone, making them exceptionally popular all over the world, thanks to the breathtaking crystal form and classical simplicity. This gemstone is the most commonly used gemstone for engagement rings, as it is rated 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, making it the hardest and most durable gemstone available, which is why they are ideal for everyday wear.
The 4 Cs
The cut, colour, clarity and carat weight are all considered when it comes to judging the quality of a gemstone. These qualities are more commonly referred to as the 4 C’s, which are considered as a universal language established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The better the 4 C’s, the more rare the diamond is considered, and therefore the value increases, as with many other different types of gemstones. To establish the 4 C’s, a diamond would need to be taken to a professional jeweller for a jewellery valuation.
Cost Per Carat
When looking at a 1 carat diamond, it can cost anywhere between $1,800 and potentially up to millions depending on the 4 C’s. Some of the most expensive diamonds in the world have sold for $1 million per carat! Diamonds come in an array of amazing colours, with red, blue and pink diamonds being particularly sought after and extremely valuable. There are less than 30 red diamonds known to exist, costing $1 million per carat, making them much more expensive than the other different types of gemstones.
Most Expensive Diamonds In History
One of the most famous and expensive diamonds sold in history is the Pink Star Diamond. It is known as one of the rarest gemstones and made history when it was sold for $71.2 million at auction in 2017. The Oppenheimer Blue diamond is another one of the rarest in the world. It is 4.62 carats and was set in a ring with two smaller diamonds on a platinum band. After a 25 minute bidding war, it sold for $57.6 million.
What Do Diamonds Symbolise?
Diamonds are classically beautiful and represent strength, love and health, as well as strength and invincibility. These traits make diamonds an extremely popular choice for engagement rings, and have done so for centuries, particularly art deco engagement rings which featured striking large diamonds. In terms of the different types of gemstones, diamonds are the most popular, and for good reason.
