Can You Get Orthodontics Treatment While You’re Pregnant?

Being pregnant is one of the biggest joys of a mother. Therefore, it is obvious that you would not want to do anything to hurt your baby. The good news is that it is perfectly safe to start to continue your orthodontic treatment. You need to stop going to the dentist to straighten your teeth just because you are pregnant. After your baby is born, it may be difficult for you to make time for dental appointments anyway.

In fact, there is little benefit for pregnant women to get orthodontic treatment. When you are pregnant, you experience a slight increase in tooth movement, making it easier for your braces to straighten your teeth. This happens because your body releases bone-affecting hormones to prepare your pelvis ligaments for childbirth. Visit Los Gatos orthodontics today.

Why is now a good time?

It is easier to undergo orthodontic treatment before a new member comes into your family, and you barely have time to schedule appointments or care for your braces. Taking care of an infant and raising them is not an easy task.

New parents barely get time to themselves. If you get braces before your child is born, you can remove them by the time your child becomes a toddler. Therefore, you will be done with your alignment before one of the most challenging phases of motherhood.

Even if you are a dad, you should get orthodontic treatment before your wife gives birth. Dads have equal responsibility in taking care of their newborns.

    Safety concerns for pregnant women

While orthodontic treatments are usually considered safe for pregnant women, there still may be certain safety concerns. Some people may be worried about the X-rays and radiation that may harm the baby. Although the amount of radiation is small, it may still pose a risk to the baby. Doctors only recommend getting X-rays for pregnant women when medically necessary. Pregnant women use a shield over their abdomen to reduce the risk of risk.

Is it safe to wear metal braces when you are pregnant?

There are no studies or research evidence showing that it is in any way harmful for the baby if pregnant women wear metal braces. Some patients are concerned due to the involvement of metal. However, you can also consider other types of braces, such as ceramic or lingual.

It is perfectly safe to undergo orthodontic treatment during pregnancy. However, you still need to inform your dentist about your pregnancy as it may change the approaches to your care. Consult with a dentist to discuss your alignment options.
