Keen Insights into Real-Time PCR for Pathogen Detection

For several scientific applications, especially pathogen detection, real-time PCR testing has become widely used. This technology is a vital tool in clinical diagnosis and research because it provides a quick, affordable, sensitive, and accurate method of identifying microorganisms.

Jant Pharmacal offers custom RT PCR panels that can be tailored to your target selection and pre-plated for analyzer compatibility. To meet your unique requirements, these custom RT PCR panels can be ordered with additional assays.

Reliable results from traditional infectious illness detection methods, including culture-based or microscopy techniques, may not be obtained for days or even weeks. For serious illnesses where prompt treatment is essential, including sepsis or septic shock, these approaches frequently fail to deliver timely information.

Additionally, not all pathogens can be cultured, which limits detection options. Newer approaches like probe hybridization and serological tests offer alternatives, but they often lack the sensitivity needed for accurate detection.

However, real-time PCR is notable for its high speed and sensitivity. PCR technology is the best available for pathogen identification because it amplifies the target DNA, enabling detection even at low levels, according to Rui Yang, PhD, a staff scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

This makes PCR not only fast but also highly reliable and versatile. There are several microorganisms can be detected through this method, which can be one of the main reasons for the following issues, such as:

    • Gastrointestinal
    • Respiratory disease
    • Urinary issues
    • Sexually transmitted illnesses

One of the biggest benefits of such a real-time PCR is that after the collection of the samples of urine or saliva, the results can be obtained within just a few hours. For example, the TrueMark Infectious Disease Research Panels from Thermo Fisher Scientific offer limited-target assays that can detect a wide range of pathogens.

These assays are not only faster and more affordable than comprehensive assays but also maintain high accuracy. These panels can be used with Thermo Fisher’s QuantStudio systems, making them an efficient solution for clinical research labs.

While limited-target PCR panels are ideal for quick detection, some research needs require testing a broader range of targets. For these cases, real-time PCR technologies like the OpenArray system provide a higher-throughput solution. Hundreds of samples can be processed in a single workday using OpenArray plates, which can accommodate over 3,000 assays on a single plate.

This technology is perfect for genotyping, gene expression analysis, and other uses. It provides a quick and less expensive substitute for next-generation sequencing (NGS), which can be expensive and time-consuming.

There are other uses for real-time PCR testing outside viral disorders. Additionally, it is important for pharmacogenomics and oncology research. Panels such as those from TrueMark are used to study cancer biomarkers and genetic responses to drugs. These developments increase the molecular testing’s potential and make real-time PCR an effective instrument for a variety of scientific domains.

Real-time PCR provides unparalleled speed, accuracy, and cost when compared to conventional diagnostic techniques. Its extensive use in numerous research fields demonstrates its worth and establishes it as a vital instrument for disease detection and other uses.
