It’s unfortunate that in today’s world personal safety has to take up so much of your time. Every time you leave the house, you need to consider ways to stay safe. Some measures become second nature such as wearing a seatbelt and locking your doors. But if you feel like this isn’t enough, consider adding additional precautions into your routine.
Carry a Weapon
Not everyone is comfortable owning a gun, but if you’re considering buying one, take a safety class first. After spending time with various types of firearms, you’ll know whether this is a safety measure that you want to add to your life. Some people prefer to carry weapons in a concealed ankle holster or specially built bag with a hidden compartment. Another option would be a can of mace or pepper spray keychain. Just like with any weapon, make sure you know how they operate before you rely on them.
Take a Self Defense Class
Taking a self-defense class builds up your confidence and skills to handle certain situations. By practicing break-away moves and effective fighting strategies, you will become more secure in your knowledge of how to defend yourself against a larger attacker. Strength training at the gym is also a step toward building your self-confidence. Knowing that you’re strong is a physical as well as a mental trait.
Trust Your Instinct
Most people have a good internal radar that lets them know when someone or some situation is not quite right. It’s okay to trust your instinct. It’s okay to turn down a ride home or cross to the other side of the street. You should never worry about offending someone who is bigger and stronger than you. If you give off a sad or lonely vibe, predators will pick up on that. Walk with confidence and purpose. Speak in a loud voice.
Ensuring your own personal safety should never be shrugged off. Your mother knew best. Call to check-in when you arrive. Walk with a buddy and don’t be afraid to yell at the top of your lungs.
