Understanding Per Carat Prices For Historical Golconda Diamonds

Talking about historically famous diamonds that originated from the Golconda diamond mines. Important to mention that, there was no single diamond mine named as the Golconda Diamond Mine – reference in reality is to a few resourceful diamond mines in that region. Golconda, a region located in present-day Telangana, India, was historically home to some of the most renowned and resource-rich diamond mines in the world. These mines, particularly those along the Krishna River basin, were active for centuries and produced diamonds of exceptional size and quality.

    GOLCONDA DIAMONDS

The Kollur Mine was one of the most prolific in the region, operating during the height of the Golconda Sultanate and later under the Mughals and the Nizams. Many of the world’s most famous diamonds—such as the Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, The Seraphim Blue Diamond, Daria-i-Noor, and Regent Diamond—are believed to have originated from Golconda. When talking about the price tags for these and other famous Golconda diamonds, standard diamond price charts are utterly irrelevant. The 4Cs (carat, color, clarity and cut) which are the basic criteria to value diamonds, become secondary when it comes to famed diamonds that originated from the Golconda diamonds.

THE 4Cs OF A DIAMOND AND BEYOND

Conventionally diamond prices are assessed as a per carat price. Arithmetically a larger diamond would be priced higher than a smaller diamond – of the same grade (4Cs criteria). However larger diamonds do, command higher per carat prices – again comparing prices of diamonds in the same grade. In the case of historic diamonds and especially those, with an origin in the legendary Golconda diamond mines – provenance takes precedence over the 4Cs.

    PROVENANCE OF A DIAMOND

The provenance of a diamond refers to its documented history and origin, including some critical aspects of the diamond. Where the diamond was mined — for example, Golconda (India), Cullinan (South Africa), or Argyle (Australia). Certain mines are known for producing diamonds of specific quality, color, or type. The whole gamut of trade in diamonds started, with the diamonds mined from the Golconda region. Commercial exploitation of the diamond mines in other countries like South Africa, Australia and Russia came much later.

The provenance of a diamond would start with the origin of a diamond. The Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, Daria-i-Noor, Seraphim Blue Diamond and Regent Diamond—have a head start in terms of provenance, this because of their origin. All these (and few other) diamonds, originated in the Golconda diamond mines – diamonds from this region are highly sought after by, high budget diamond collectors.

The chain of past owners, especially if the diamond belonged to royalty, nobility, or famous collectors, features in the provenance of a diamond. In the case of diamonds like the Koh-i-Noor diamond and the Seraphim Blue Diamond, we have diamonds that originated in the famed Golconda diamond mines and also, have a connection to royalty. The Koh-i-Noor diamond has a long history involving multiple dynasties and empires. The Seraphim Blue Diamond which has never been auctioned, is said to have been worn by Asaf Jah 1 the first Nizam of Hyderabad in an intricately designed turban ornament. It was way back in 1724 when, Asaf Jah 1 started the reign of the Nizams over the Deccan region.

    HYPOTHETICAL PRICE ESTIMATES

Now to the important point of per carat price of historic Golconda diamonds, based on size. Hypothetical estimates as most of these diamonds are unlikely to come up for sale, during our time. The Hope Diamond is considered priceless, but estimates of its market value typically range between $200 million to $350 million, though it’s unlikely to ever be sold due to its historical significance. The grayish blue Hope diamond weighs around 45.52 carats.

The Seraphim Blue Diamond has remained elusive for centuries. This after the second Nizam of Hyderabad, handed over the blue Golconda diamond to the French, this in return for military support. A few diamond experts who have had a chance to inspect the Seraphim Blue Diamond in recent times claim, that the Golconda blue diamond has a fine blue color and a high rating on clarity. Expected to be part of a Russian/European collection, the diamond has an assessed weight of around 6 to 8 carats. Once part of a lavish turban ornament worn by the first Nizam of Hyderabad, the Seraphim Blue Diamond is said to have a pear shape with an old mine cutting style. The high profile auction circuit has waited way too long, for an auction that involved a Golconda blue diamond with a dream provenance. Hypothetically speaking, an auction for the Seraphim Blue Diamond if conducted today, by big auction houses like Christie’s or Sotheby’s – could fetch a per carat price of around $10 million to $15 million.

    NOTES

When it comes to auctioning rare Golconda diamond, it has been repeatedly observed that, even when experts predict a “reasonable” top bid, passion and prestige override prediction. In the world of one-of-a-kind treasures, logic bows to emotion — and there’s always someone willing to write their name into history by owning the stone.
