What to Expect During a Fixed Bridge Procedure?

If you have missing teeth, a fixed bridge is a standard dental procedure that can restore your smile and improve oral health. A fixed bridge is a dental restoration comprising two or more crowns on either side of the gap created by missing teeth, with a false tooth in between.

The procedure involves preparing the abutment teeth adjacent to the gap and placing the bridge over them. A Columbia, SC dental bridge can reduce several dental problems. However, you must consult a dentist to ensure you are getting proper guidance.

Preparing for a fixed dental bridge procedure:

    1. Examination and planning

During the examination and planning phase of a fixed bridge procedure, your dentist will assess the condition of your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine if a fixed bridge is a suitable treatment option. X-rays and impressions may also be taken to create a personalized treatment plan. This step is essential to ensure the fixed bridge fits well, feels comfortable, and provides long-lasting results.

    1. Tooth preparation

To prepare your teeth for a fixed bridge, your dentist must remove a portion of the enamel on the abutment teeth by the missing tooth or teeth. It is done to create enough space for the bridge to fit snugly and securely. The tooth preparation process may involve local anesthesia to minimize discomfort, and your dentist will ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.

    1. Impression taking

During the impression-taking phase of a fixed bridge procedure, your dentist will mold your teeth and gums using a putty-like material. A dental laboratory will use this mold to create your custom bridge. It is essential to get an accurate impression to ensure the bridge fits well and adequately functions. This process is usually quick and painless and can be completed in a single appointment.

    1. Temporary bridge

During the fixed bridge procedure, your dentist may place a temporary bridge over the prepared teeth to protect them while your permanent bridge is being fabricated. This temporary bridge is acrylic and designed to look and function like natural teeth. While wearing the temporary bridge, you should avoid sticky or hard foods to prevent it from dislodging. Once the permanent bridge is ready, the temporary bridge will be removed, and the permanent bridge will be placed.

    1. Fitting the bridge

Fitting the bridge is the final step in the fixed bridge procedure. Your dentist will remove the temporary bridge and carefully fit the permanent bridge over the prepared teeth. They will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit, and once in place, the bridge will be cemented to the teeth using a dental adhesive. You may be asked to bite down to ensure the bridge feels comfortable and functions correctly.
