3 Things to Consider When Buying a Boat

Boats are fun. No doubt about it. They offer the freedom to sail the open seas, lakes and rivers so that you can see the world up close and personal. However, that does not mean that you should go out and buy one right away. Here are a few elements to think about before purchasing a watercraft.

    1. Taking Care of the Boat

Owning a boat means that there will be marine maintenance to keep in mind. Boats are, by nature, exposed to the elements. You can reduce these factors by housing them in shelters, but you will still be taking them out onto the open water at some point. Make sure that you wash and wax the fiberglass components so that they don’t get ruined. Keep plenty of gas in the tank and spare amounts as well. The motor will need all the sand and dirt evacuated from it every time you take it out.

    1. Purpose

Boats can be used in many ways. They can be used recreationally or professionally. Here are a few common types:

    • Pontoon
    • Speed
    • Fishing
    • House
    • Sail
    • Catamarans

All of these serve different purposes. If you want to live on the water, a houseboat may be right for you. Just make sure you find a dock that allows you to do so. Pontoon boats are great for hosting parties and gatherings on calm water. Sailboats will take you out to sea for adventures. Fishing boats are self-explanatory.

    1. Financing

Unfortunately, boats aren’t cheap. Many cost upwards of $10,000 and much more. That is just the upfront cost. You also need to think about the insurance and the upkeep. The maintenance per year will cost approximately 10 percent of what you spent on the boat. You can work with a bank to negotiate a loan. Don’t forget to save up for a down payment.

Although boats can take a lot of time and effort to take care of, many people agree that they have brought them pleasure and joy that nothing else has. Watching fireworks in July or taking fishing trips in October are memories that will last a lifetime.
